Joseph Antonio Canizales is a Salvadoran Honduran American artist based in Miami, FL. He is a Professor of Visual Arts at iArt Institute and received a Masters of Fine Arts from Washington University in St. Louis and a Bachelors of Fine Arts from the Kansas City Art Institute. Through digital and analog processes, his work reflects upon our understanding of the intertwined relationship between geological forces and our built environment. He draws connections between the modern rapid construction methods of extracting, gathering, and processing of stone and the incredibly slow yet determined march of naturally occurring erosion. He utilizes 3D printing, 3D modeling, 3D scanning, and analog processes to amplify an understanding of geological sites.

Canizales work has been included in exhibitions at the Kemper Art Museum, the Cité Internationale des arts Paris, FR, Patience Gallery United Kingdom, the Bruno David Gallery, Granite City Art and Design District, and virtual exhibitions about environmental art. He is the recipient of the Miliken Travel Award, Honorable Mention International Sculpture Center Achievement in Student Contemporary Sculpture, Chancellors Graduate Fellowship, Ellen Battel Stoeckle Fellowship, Mckeown Grant, and has essay publications in UC Berkeley Architecture Journal and Washington University in St. Louis Open Scholarship. He has done residencies at the Cité Internationale des arts Paris, FR and Franconia Sculpture Park Shafer, MN.
